Poetry has always been a great love of Louise’s and to commemorate the anniversary of the start of the First World War, Louise has begun a series of hand and machine embroidered portraits of poets who died during the war. The original portrait of Wilfred Owen is embroidered on cotton fabric, dyed with tea. Using the gentle simplicity of line there are many visual metaphors within the portrait which depict many aspects of Wilfred Owen’s life – not just the war. Behind his shoulders is the outline of Wrekin Hill in Shropshire, it is littered with fallen, autumn leaves, some still alive, some dead. The flowers which frame the image are the sundew, the flower of Shropshire and the creeping buttercup. Flying over Wilfred’s shoulder is an eagle, as he had once hoped to fly with the RAF over the Wrekin. The poem ‘Hospital Barge’ is hand stitched illustrating first the River Severn, then it becomes Sambre-Oise Canal, where Wilfred died. Upon Wilfred’s cap is hand stitched the poem ‘Mental Cases’.

Louise Sambrook Underwood is a Textile and 3D artist, originally from Shrewsbury, now living in Newcastle upon Tyne. Her work has been commissioned by many museums and galleries in the North of England.

The prints will be delivered backed with strong card and wrapped in cellophane to ensure safe delivery.
